Cost control playbook

Use VM sizing, spot instances, tags, and idle shutdown.

Cost Control Playbook

Cloud elasticity is useful only when cleanup is reliable. Cost control is a technical design requirement, not an accounting afterthought.

Practical controls

  • Use idle shutdown for interactive clusters.
  • Tag workloads by owner, project, and environment.
  • Prefer region-local data access.
  • Consider spot instances for retryable work.
  • Right-size VM memory and CPU for the observed workload.

Simple review

Before scaling from 20 to 200 workers, ask:

  1. Is the current bottleneck parallelizable?
  2. Are partitions large enough?
  3. Will more workers increase data transfer?
